youre not ridiculous, but quite accurate. dec 21/22 is called 冬至 (touji, in jpns. im sure it comes from chns)and is the shortest day (longest night) of the year. so yeah, more sunlight to come!
fyi, traditionally in jpn, people take a 柚子(yuzu - a citrus fruit) bath and/or eat pumpkin (to keep warm, i guess?)

it's interesting how chinese and japanese relate to each other. 冬is the first character of 冬天(dongtian), winter. though 至(zhi) doesn't really have a meaning on it's own, part of an expression it takes on the meaning 'to' or 'until' depending on the context i guess.
is 柚子 grapefruit?...because that's what my dictionary translates it into.
i think a grapefruit bath sounds lovely. i'll try to remember that (and the pumpkin!) for the next winter solstice - 冬天至点.
